Dinan is a beautiful medieval city..
Dinan is a beautiful medieval city..
Dinan is a beautiful medieval city set on a hill overlooking the river Rance in the heart of Brittany. It is a walled city. The walls and buildings have been preserved and unchanged for centuries with its stone, wood and slate buildings and cobbled streets. The town boasts a large array of fine restaurants, bars and shops all set in these fairytale surroundings. Most restaurants and cafes have outside seating throughout the summer, so making an ideal place to peoplewatch!
A must is the fabulous, infamous seafood available at a fraction of the prices in England. There are oysters galore in most restaurants, and I defy anybody to finish the seafood platter at ‘The Cottage’ restaurant at the end of the road, it is fantastic. Also local to this area is Cidre, (cider) drunk out of deep bowl, it is delicious.
The oldest and most picturesque part of the city..
The oldest and most picturesque part of the city..
The oldest and most picturesque part of the city is the Rue Jerzual and the Rue du Petit Fort which is a cobbled street leading down from the town to the port. It is home to many craft shops and restaurants as well as our house which is situated in the middle of it all.
The port boasts an abundance of sailing vessels and houseboats from all over the world. The river has good fishing, boat trips to St Malo and other towns and a towpath with lovely walks. Of course the port houses more restaurants and bars.
The biannual festival of ‘La Fete des Remparts’
The biannual festival of ‘La Fete des Remparts’
The biannual festival of ‘La Fete des Remparts’ (The Festival of the Battlements) is celebrated this year (2007) over the last weekend of July. This year the festival promises to be as lively as ever. The medieval charm of Dinan is celebrated with tournaments, re-enactments and finally a parade. Residents and visitors are dressed in medieval costume and sing and dance to local bands. Of course there is plenty of eating and drinking. For further information there is a tourist information bureau in the town with lists of places to see, things to do and maps.
